Today the workshop started with an introduction talk about shutter types. - In DSLR's there are 2 shutter types!
- Focal Plane (shutter is right by the film/digital chip)
- Leaf shutters (they allow us to control mixing light)
Flash sync speed = fastest shutter speed that you can use with your flash
SYMBOL - 60th of second
We got shown various of examples of photographers who used fill in flash in their images
photographer’s introduced: Adam Amengual, Philip Dicorsia, Jooney Woodard, Kate Peters, Dominic Gigler, Kiran Master, Sage Sohier, Larry Sultan and Charles Freger.
Equipment for this task!
- 1X Medium format camera - leaf shutters
- 1X Sekonic SO8B (Flash meter)
- 1X Tripod
- 1X EXT Sync (Female to Male)
- 1X colour film fuji 160
- 1X Magic arm
- 1X Super clamp
- 1X Pocket Wizard
Working in groups we got a task:
- · Make set of portraits in a interior space
- Combine available-light with the Metz flash. Fill-in technique
- · With Manual settings; Crete images with different ratios: -2 and -3 stops. (Combine with ambient light)
- · Bounced and diffused technique should be used (Spun and Neutral Density gel)
- · Two frames on Auto settings
Light Metre - Sunshine setting + FSTOP
- Shutter speed dictates how bright and dark the background is
- Power of the flash dictates how bright your subject is
- Aperture ring dictates how bright/dark your overall scene is
First contact sheet is the work of Edvard in my group - where I kindly modelled
Second contact sheet - Here Dana and I shared a film together - I shot the first 4
Received knowledge:
- · Shutter speed dictates background light (ambient)
- Decision of how much depth of field you have must dictate the Ambient light meter reading
- It is recommended that the power.aperture of the fill-in flash should be: 2 to 3 f-stops LESS than the Ambient
- · The power of flash dictates subject brightness
- · The aperture effects everything: overall brightness of the image
- · Move the subject from the background
- · Taking readings with flash meter from subject – always flash mode shutter speed should be set on 1/500
Ratio types:
1:1=0 F-Stop
2:1=1 F-Stop
3:1=1.5 F-Stop
4:1=2 F-Stop
